A Gorilla Trek Rwanda permit costs from US$1500 to US$5000. The difference in costs depends if you want a private tour or require a porter to help carry your equipment. Added costs can include meals, gratuities, transport, and accommodation.

Are gorillas the largest living primates?

Gorillas are the largest living primates, reaching heights between 1.25 and 1.8 meters. They can weigh between 100 kg and 270 kg (males are generally twice the weight of females) and have arm spans up to 2.6 meters, depending on species and sex. They tend to live in troops, with the leader called a Silverback.

The Eastern Gorilla is distinguished from the Western Gorilla by a darker fur color and some other minor morphological differences. Gorillas tend to live 35–40 years in the wild.

Gorillas are the largest of the great apes (there are 5 species of great ape, including, gorilla, orangutan, chimpanzee, bonobo, and human).

Gorillas have both black hair and skin but lack any hair on their face, hands, and feet, the chest of a male gorilla is also bare. and small eyes set into hairless faces. The gorilla’s face has small ears, small eyes with large nostrils, and a prominent brow ridge.

Day 1: Kigali City tour and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park.

You will be picked up at your hotel in Kigali at your convenience and then proceed for a Kigali city tour

Later embark on the drive to Volcanoes National Park https://www.volcanoesnationalparkrwanda.com in the Musanze Province. Volcanoes National Park is home to over 360 mountain gorillas with 7 habituated groups available for you to trek. You will book into your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Trekking Rwanda and visit to the Ibywacu Cultural Centre

After an early morning breakfast, you will transfer to Kinigi Park Headquarters for a briefing by the park warden. After that, you will be allocated a gorilla group to trek with. By 8:30, all tourists will transfer to various starting points for gorilla trekking.

The gorilla trek lasts between 1 to 6 hours before you finally find the mountain gorillas which are constantly moving about. Upon spotting them, you are free to stay in their presence taking photographs for a maximum of 1 hour. Then return to the point where your vehicle is stationed and transfer you back to your hotel.

Day 3: Golden Monkey trekking and Afternoon visit to the Twin lakes of Burera and Ruhonda

After another early breakfast on the third day of your tour, you return to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters to report for your Golden Monkey Tracking.  As the day before, you will be served coffee and tea while you watch a local drum and dance group entertain you briefly.

You will then be assigned a group and a Ranger Guide to brief you on the Golden Monkey Tracking procedure.  You will then go with your group to the track and begin your search for the Golden Monkeys.  As they prefer bamboo to eat, they are not as difficult as the Mountain Gorillas to find; your search will begin at the foothills of the bamboo forest, which is nearby.

Once your Golden Monkey Tracking is complete, you will return to the vehicle and re-unite with your guide, who will transfer you to the hotel for lunch. After a brief rest, we take a sundown boat cruise on Lake Burera and Ruhondo.

Day 4: Canoeing on River Mukungwa, Departure

After an early breakfast, we set off at 7:30 AM for a half-day (3 – 4 hours) canoe ride on River Mukungwa that offers a lovely tour of the beautiful countryside. Enjoy breathtaking views of the rolling landscape, meet the locals, and watch wildlife including birds.

After the Canoe ride, head for lunch and then transfer to Kigali where you will be dropped at the airport for your scheduled flight back home.
