Hoedspruit South Africa is the Big5 capital of South Africa, Limpopo Province in the Mopani District in the Maruleng Municipality.

Hoedspruit is the Afrikaans word for “hat creek”. The farm was registered on the 5th of May 1848 after a local farmer lost his hat in the creek after a heavy rain storm.

There is a camera shop for all your last-minute photographic needs before you go off to the Kruger Park. A variety of clothing stores, a ladies boutique clothing store, Bureau de Change, bookshop, cell phone shop, a leather shop, curio shop and 2 jewelry shops will keep you busy. There is ample parking and clean toilets in the Center.

There are more pubs in 30 other restaurants, pub & grill, pizzerias, coffee shops and bistros in town and the surrounding area including Spur Steak Ranch, Wimpy, KFC and Mugg & Bean.

Hoedspruit has 3 shopping centers in town, Pick n Pay, Spar and La Bamba, all with a great variety of fresh fruit, vegetables, and groceries if you are self-catering or stocking up on your way to Kruger National Park. The town has 5 liquor stores that have a great assortment of good South African wines, spirits, and beers.

ABSA, Standard, FNB and Capitec Bank all have branches in Hoedspruit. There are plenty of ATM machines to draw cash. There are two tyre repair shops, Dunlop Zone and Hi-Q Tyres. Toyota, Nissan and Mahindra all have workshops in Hoedspruit. There are three chemists for medical supplies and a medical center, with doctor’s rooms, however there isn’t a Private Hospital in Hoedspruit. The nearest medical facility is a Mediclinic, an hour’s Tzaneen, just over one hours drive away.

Your ideal base to visit the Panorama Route, Blyde Canyon is Hoedspruit. Take a Blyde dam boat cruises or a 45-minute drive to Orpen Gate Kruger National Park. These three tourist routes are all within an easy day’s outing. With horse trails, mountain bike routes, quad bike safari, hot air ballooning, white-water rafting, and so much more.
