What is the best time of the year for a hot air balloon ride?
Sun Catchers fly throughout the year however the winter months from late April to early October are the best months to fly. Normally the air is cleaner and site seeing is better. It can, however, get a bit chilly in the winter so come dressed warmly.
What can you expect from Sun Catchers Hot Air Ballooning?
You meet before sunrise and coffee is served while you watch your eight-story high hot air balloon inflated and prepared for flight. After a safety briefing, you should be airborne to witness the sunrise. The height above ground will vary from skimming the tree tops to as high as 2,000 feet. The pilot changes altitude in search of favorable wind directions and speeds.
The flight duration is about an hour, and the pilot will select a suitable landing site towards the end of the flight. The landing is exciting because the basket meets the earth at whatever speed the surface wind is.
Light airs allow the softest landings while fresh breezes necessitate a “positive” landing. The basket can serve as an anchor to slow the envelope down. If not already at the landing site, the ground crew will soon arrive to deflate and pack the balloon while passengers enjoy fruit juice and sparkling wine.
Who can participate in a hot air balloon ride?
Passengers must be fit enough to stand unassisted for an hour and must also be able to climb in and out of the basket. Youngsters are welcome but should be at least 1.2m (4 feet) tall to see over the basket rim. Regrettably, pregnant persons may not participate in a balloon flight. Hot air ballooning is a family outing.
What to wear on a hot air balloon ride?
Hot air balloon rides can be nippy at dawn in the winter, but you will be surprisingly warm once you’re up in the basket.
Warm clothes will be useful during pre-flight. Bring your cameras and binoculars.

Hot Air Ballooning Hoedspruit – an adventure of a lifetime activity
Are Hot Air Ballon rides worth it? Hot air ballooning is a recreational activity and a form of aviation where a balloon filled with hot air ascends due to buoyancy. Here are some key points about hot-air ballooning:
- How it Works: Hot air balloons work on the principle that hot air is lighter than cool air. A propane burner heats the air inside the balloon, making it less dense than the surrounding air, causing it to rise.
- Equipment: Hot air balloons consist of an envelope (the balloon itself), a burner, and a basket or gondola for passengers and the pilot. The burner heats the air, and the pilot controls the ascent and descent by adjusting the heat.
- Experience: Hot air ballooning provides a serene and scenic experience. Participants can enjoy panoramic views from high altitudes, and the slow pace of the balloon allows for a peaceful and immersive experience.
- Safety: Hot air ballooning is generally considered safe. Conducted by experienced and certified pilots. Safety measures include regular equipment inspections, weather considerations, and adherence to established guidelines.
- Licensing: Pilots need to be licensed to operate hot air balloons. Licensing requirements involve training, written exams, and practical experience.
- Weather Considerations: Weather plays a crucial role in hot air ballooning. Balloon flights are typically scheduled in the early morning or late afternoon when the weather conditions are more stable.
